- Telangana Sailors made the state proud with the largest haul of medals for the state in history

Hyderabad, January 08, 2022: Concluding with two Bronze medals at the Mumbai Nationals in the young sailors Vaishnavi Veeravamsham, 15 and Preethi Kongara,17 who have just moved into the senior category jumping straight from the under 15 Sub Juniors to the senior category, Telangana Sailors have made the state proud with the largest haul of medals for the state in history.
Both sailors have been selected to participate at the Asian Regatta to be held at Abu Dhabi in February 2022 and are preparing hard for the same.
The Yacht Club of Hyderabad Foundation searches for talent from amongst economically challenged youth and they join at the age of 9 and 10 and are groomed into sailors of international calibre with the finest of education, equipment, training and nutrition.
The Naavika Program launched in 2016 for the girl sailor has been a phenomenal success, having trained about 100 girls and selected 12 of them for advanced high performance training.
The state of Telangana has garnered more than 100 medals on the past 10 years with sailors like Vaishnavi Veeravamsham and Jhansi Priya having participated in 5 countries while still below 15 years of age.
4 of the girls have joined the ecosystem created by the Indian Navy at Mumbai wherein they helm the 470 Mixed Olympic Class of Boats which are ably crewed by Naval officers most of which are 10 years older than them and Preethi Kongara, 17 from YCH and Sudanshu Shekhar, 24 of the Navy clinched a Bronze at the recently concluded YAI Sail India National Ranking event at Mumbai.
19 boys have been absorbed into superb careers I to the Army and Navy that will take care of all needs for Sailing and Education till they are fully absorbed.
Vaishnavi Veeravamsham is placed India No.2 in the Laser Radial at just 15 and is rapidly improving her technique despite her age and lack of weight in the Laser ILCA 4 class and is training under multiple International coaches and her mentor and primary coach Suheim Sheikh also the President of the YCH.
“This has been a fantastic year for us at the Yacht Club of Hyderabad Foundation and we are now deeply encouraged to mobilise a much large number of sailors from across the state to take them to these heights of performance and our ultimate goal is to provide them with their dream careers alongside”, said Suheim Sheikh.
Ravali Parandi and Jhansi Priya Laveti closed their under 15 Sub-Junior careers at a pinnacle with two medals each at the Nationals. They move ahead into the Olympic Classes of boats the 470 mixed and Laser respectively.
The sailors joined in 2016 at the age of 10 and are close to the top of the national ranking even before they hit the age of 16.
